This book gathers the biographies of about two thousand men and women of Basque origin. They are brief reflexions about these people´s lives and contribution to the collective memory map in our country. A lot of the characters in these pages are unknown; others, however, already lived the glory of appreciation. In that collection of lights and shadows, Who is who is a common house; as the Basque society has been during its history, a house of great oppositions. As Pío Baroja would have reminded everyone, Ignacio from Loyola and Francisco Javier; first swordmen of Jesús´Company, were as Basque as Saint-Cyran (Jean Duvergier); the jansenistic from Bayonne and a Jesuit enemy. Zumalakarregi, Elio and Radica; among others, were carlists who had some liberals, such as Mina, Txapalangara or Jáuregui in front of them. The encyclopedist in Gipuzkoa shared experiences with the most retrograde priests and the most active guerrilla fighters with the most sinister policemen. People from all origins; in a representative portion, shape the pages of this book.
