In this novel, full of smells and the desert light, the authoress recalls the 20th century first half Algeria through the character of Mahmud, a man who would have wanted to devote his days to cultivating love and poetry and sees his destiny truncated for family traditions, history and perhaps, by chance as well. His wife will be raped and murdered in front of Yasmina, her daughter, who will outlive the tragedy although she will not speak anymore. Mahmoud, shattered by pain, will bring her up to be a well-educated woman and above all free. She will be the one who takes charge of relieving.
