Mapas para una Nación. Euskal Herria en la cartografía y en los testimonios históricos
“Lacking historical ground”, “entelechy”, “invention”, “farce”... Since 2000 we have witnessed an unprecedented attack on the concept of Euskal Herria: “We must pursue and punish the schools that teach Euskal Herria’s history integrating Navarre”, said Miguel Sanz President of the Government of Navarre in 2003. “Euskal Herria is a sham”, said Jose Maria Aznar in January 2008. “Zapatero takes a period of two months to remove the term Euskal Herria from the Basque school curriculum”, could be read in El Correo (26.VI.08). In May 2011, the High Court of Justice of Navarre outlawed Basque textbooks containing the word Euskal Herria. By then, the weather map had already been withdrawn from the Basque TV, in the middle of terrible media harassment.
This book brings in more than a hundred maps, the cartography of the four or the seven Basque Provinces, published in the last centuries. It also reviews the history of the name of the Basque country in literature from all over the world, encyclopaedias, travel guides, official edicts...
A name, a land, a history. And once again, a necessary book to show the obvious.
